How does stretching help with my mental wellbeing?

Stretching is a simple but impactful technique to help with your day to day wellbeing. It's an opportunity to check in with your body and to keep asking questions. It's important to keep the range of movement and also by stretching you are opening up your body physically, being more open mentally.

It's easy to implement into your routine and you can do this anywhere - whether you're at your desk or even in bed! Here are some of the ways this technique can help you:

1. Reduce stress and anxiety: When you stretch, your body releases tension stored in your muscles, which can help to calm your mind. This physical relaxation signals to your brain that it’s okay to relax, reducing the production of stress hormones like cortisol.

2. Enhances Mindfulness: By checking in with your body and remembering to strecth like this, you are focusing on the present moment without judgment. By concentrating on your breath and the sensations in your body during stretching, you can cultivate a state of mindfulness that reduces mental chatter and promotes mental clarity.

3. Boosts Energy Levels: Stretching increases blood flow and the supply of oxygen to your muscles, which can help to fight fatigue and improve overall vitality. Feeling more energetic will in turn help motivate you to tackle daily challenges with a positive mindset.

How to make stretching a normal part of your routine:

  • Set Aside Time: Dedicate specific times during the day for stretching, such as in the morning or before bed.
  • Focus on Breathing: Pay attention to your breathing while stretching to enhance relaxation and mindfulness.
  • Listen to Your Body: Stretch gently and avoid pushing yourself too hard to prevent injury.

By making stretching a regular part of your routine, you can enjoy both the physical and mental benefits it offers. Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, improve your mood, or enhance your overall sense of wellbeing, stretching can be a valuable tool in your mental wellbeing toolkit.
